Lilly Allen - The Fear

Quem se lembra da cantora britânica Lily Allen?  O videoclip que apresento hoje faz parte do álbum intitulado It’s not me it’s you, lançado em 2008 — o primeiro single do mesmo chama-se "The Fear". A letra que acompanha o videoclip fala sobre uma rapariga que vive uma vida materialista.

 Letra:

A música começa com a voz que Allen dá a esta personagem com as frases: “I want to be rich and I want lots of money // I don't care about clever, I don't care about funny

//I want loads of clothes and fuckloads of diamonds // I heard people die while they are trying to find them”. Nas primeiras frases da música, a repetição da palavra I não é uma coincidência, assim como a repetição de “I want” e “I don’t care”, antes uma forma de desenhar o mundo que esta personagem vive.

A frase “I'll look at the sun and I'll look in the mirror” é uma referência a dois jornais tabloid bastante conhecidos no Reino Unido, intitulados The Sun e The Mirror. Ou seja, a fama só poderá ser validada através dos media, servindo estes não como uma fonte de informação, mas sim um mediador de fama social. “But it doesn't matter 'cause I'm packing plastic” pode ser entendido como uma referência ao consumismo desenfreado, sendo que “packing plastic” significa posse de cartões de crédito/débito ou então, também pode ser entendido como uma referência a cirurgias plásticas que muitos famosos fazem numa tentativa de manterem a falsa imagem previamente criada.

No entanto, na frase seguinte a protagonista desculpa-se com “And I am a weapon of massive consumption // And it's not my fault, it's how I'm programmed to function”, sendo que não há uma tentativa para mudar ou melhorar o que se encontra à sua volta. Aceita as “regras do jogo” e vive a sua vida maravilhosa (“life so fuckin' fantastic”) sob as mesmas. Todavia, esta personagem tem consciência do consumismo e do materialismo em que vive e que simultaneamente alimenta. 

Sobre a razão pela qual escreveu esta música que tem como temática o materialismo das sociedades capitalistas, Allen explicou que ao estar a passear na rua de uma pequena vila numa parte rural do Reino Unido, viu uma criança com menos de dez anos vestida com um "crop top" e calções muito curtos. O primeiro pensamento que lhe veio à cabeça era que aquilo não era roupa própria para ser usada por uma criança, por isso pensou que se tratava de alguém influenciado pela pressão da fama, alguém que daqui a uns anos iria fazer audições para os "Talent Show". Esta é a cultura da atualidade que, segundo Allen: “não é um tipo de cultura que ache saudável, no entanto existe e eu acabo por fazer parte dela”.
