Katy Perry_'Bon Appétit'

Katy Perry's "Bon Appétit" is a video comparing a woman to a meal, ready to be devoured, as indicated by not only the visual themes throughout the video, but also by the lyrics. The video starts with some squirting noises as the name of the song is coated onto some batter, followed by a  neon “NSFW” (Not Safe for Work) which marks the start of a rather disturbing experience.


Katy Perry appears covered in saran wrap, much like a steak, and is presented to the viewer with skin-colored, form-fitting lingerie. A group of knife-sharpening chefs surround her, cut her out, and push her into a vat of flour, like one would do to batter, before pounding it (which I think is the metaphor they were going for here). The group of chefs then roll her out like dough, twisting her body in several disturbing ways. She’s put on a wooden board, seasoned and “dressed” with a plethora of vegetables, and thrown into a boiling pot of water. Her nails, and the rest of her body, are basted “sensually”. Her hair is chopped off, her tongue is burned, and she is garnished with some shiny caviar (which serves as a pair of earrings). There is a cut to Quavo, money in hand, singing about what he will do with the lady now spread out on his table. A stripper pole emerges from the table, and she begins dancing for the group of men around the table. The video ends with Katy Perry in front of a cherry pie made of body parts. Visually, this video manages to convey the message of the lyrics very well, as you can see.

This, I believe, illustrates quite well where we currently are regarding our view of women.

  1. Olá, colega. Claramente temos aqui presente a hipersexualização do corpo feminino levada ao extremo. Além da música conter uma letra bastante perversa e ousada que grita a necessidade de sexo e a disponibilidade por parte de Perry, o vídeo musical também fala por si, na utilização de cores vibrantes e por a narrativa que é revelada. O que choca aqui o espetador, em meu entender, não é a novidade deste género de texto cultural, algo que já é bastante recorrente na indústria musical, mas sim o comportamento por parte da cantora ao expor o seu corpo e o modo inquietante que “Bon Appétit” revela na sua composição.
    Enquanto seres críticos e racionais, somos levados a pensar sobre qual é a função que esta música detém nas indústrias culturais. Efetivamente somos remetidos a questionar a intenção de Katy Perry ao produzir esta música – será que o que está a ser vendido é a música em si ou é a utilização do corpo feminino para atrair mais audiência? É uma questão que oferece dúvidas. Com efeito, qualquer que seja o propósito, é uma sonoridade que fica no ouvido… ~

  2. São exemplos como este que me fazem questionar a qualidade dos "role models" que existem na atualidade. Estas pessoas são parte de quem influência as gerações mais jovens a definir uma identidade própria, e com base neste video (e música), não consigo ver nada de bom para quem assiste a tal. Pergunto-me se as nossas escolhas para definir "role models" (porque no final de contas somos nós que escolhemos quem se torna famoso) irão mais além de isto, ou se as ambições das gerações futuras (e presentes) se irão ficar por ser um prato de comida, entre muitas outras coisas.
