INvisible Environment *

Marshall McLuhan's reflections about invisible environments made me think of a story for children written by the wonderful Manuel António Pina (1943-2011) titled "O país das pessoas de pernas para o ar" (the country of the people with legs up in the air). My copy [exactly like the one in the picture] dates back to the 1970s and was offered to me by aunt Nélinha; my signature trembles, in the first steps of dominating the medium of handwriting. The edition is beautiful, hard-cover with illustrations by João B. printed individually and glued to a grid on the right-hand page. I found this and other treasures when I taught Literature for Children at several colleges, some years ago.

Fausto, the bird, decided to pack and travel to get to know the world and he arrived at a country where people walked with their hands on the floor and their legs up. Exchanging stories with Fausto, the inhabitants of that country could not believe there was a place on Earth where people could possibly walk upside down. And they asked questions, such as "How can you turn the light on at night?", because in that country the light switches were close to the ground.
Manuel António Pina's writings for children are amazing, comparable to Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in the Wonderland (1865). You can listen to the story in Portuguese here.

This story plays with the fact that our environment, shaped by technology, becomes invisible, or naturalized.
